Lions storm to 6-1 victory

Move over Storm Brian, there was another storm brewing in Camberley. There was torrential rain followed by glorious sunshine, dark skies, then lashing rain and so it went on.

The Lions not to be outdone by the adverse weather and soggy pitch conditions were in tempestuous mood and produced a storming team performance to beat Darby Green and Potley Dynamos 6-1 and maintain their unbeaten league run.

Henry captain for the day having lost the toss to kick-off had the tactical nous to choose to start to the game playing uphill. An inspired choice considering we had nine players, no substitutes and with the rain belting down the ground got soggier and the legs got groggier.

From the kick-off the Lions went with the tried and trusted 3-4-1 formation and maintained the attacking diamond with good passing and positional play. The emphasis was to pass the ball in the air as it was going nowhere in a hurry along the ground.
There was some great one-two combinations of passes and a barrage of shots on goal until Sean broke the deadlock in the 7th minute. Two minutes later Aaron spectacularly chipped the goalkicker only for it to be ruled off-side. Travesty.

In the second quarter Sam swapped goalkeeper duties with Sean and it wasn’t long before he was climbing up the hill to latch onto a neat pass from Aaron to make it 2-0. The second quarter saw the worst of the torrential rain and it was brilliant to watch the players breaking up play, finding the space and making the passes especially James and Daniel who were dominating the midfield.

Half time couldn’t come quickly enough. At the first opportunity the players pounced on the team oranges kindly supplied by Polly Fry. With oranges consumed, energy restored, rain at bay and playing downhill there was an immediate pick up in tempo and you could sense the deluge was coming.

It didn’t take long until Sean curled in a shot to make it 3-0. The Dynamos with nothing to lose threw caution to the wind and it wasn’t long until a hurricane was in our goalmouth with Daniel saving volley after volley. We tried to baton down the hatches however the Dynamos were in full force and got their just reward with a deserved goal.

With the wind in their sails the Dynamos came back stronger and Daniel was making save after save until the wind went out of his sails with a stray boot hitting him between the legs. With deep breathes of air and an emergency water break, Daniel was back on his feet in no time to launch the ball up the other half for Will to latch onto the pass and strike an absolute thunderbolt of a goal to make it 4-1.

The last quarter we regained our composure with Henry and Harry playing some nice one two’s down the right. The Dynamos were struggling playing uphill, we sensed it and it wasn’t long before Araon got his just rewards for his persistence in front of goal to make it 5-1.

The Dynamos pushed everyone forward and it was raining shots in our goalmouth. Jack did a fantastic job to wither the storm. Boom, against the run of play Sam races “downfield” and hits an absolute howler off the crossbar into the goal to make it 6-1.

A tremendous performance from every Lion today, the boys played their socks off in treacherous conditions. A real team effort and thoroughly deserved win.
