We lost 7-1. Not nice. Hard day. Good early exchanges saw us compete well across the pitch. We fell behind after 3 mins when Sam didn’t clear quick enough and a shot into the bottom right corner. We then took the game by the scruff of the neck and after a couple of corners we then played a series of passes down the middle of the pitch that saw Noah, Fin, JoshA combine with JoshP slotting home the equaliser. A fairly innocuous coming-together in the box saw a poor ref decision to award a pen and that was 2-1. 5 mins later and a 25-yard grub shot bounces over a waiting-Karim for 3-1. With 5-mins to HT they grabbed a 4-1 lead with a break through and low shot. We had a few chances - but we were losing shape and not competing in the breakdown and loose play - which meant that we were playing off half-chances and we never seemed to get the ball under any sort of control. We moved from 4-2-3-1 to 3-4-3 in the 2nd period with the intention of pushing the play wider and getting some sense of play in the midfield - but we conceded three 2H goals as we were getting caught on the break throughout - with the odd mistake costing us each time. My views on the referee I’ll keep to myself - but his extended conversation with Karim for a supposed handling outside the box, I thought, simply let himself down. I liked watching Fin and Noah today - some nice touches and passing more through the centre than their usual out wide roles. JoshP looked a threat and Jack worked tirelessly against a surging tide of red and white. Things we didn’t do today - not winning first and second balls - not closing down in midfield - which meant that they had time to pass the ball between and around our backs. When we did get the ball (after the first quarter) - we gave it away cheaply and lacked a joined up approach. Which means that our defence looks ragged simply because after cleaning up and pushing up, they’re running backwards and being picked off again, 5 seconds later as we’re not keeping the ball. All of which we’ll work on over the coming weeks - learn and develop! So a tough day for the boys. MOTM - Karim made a string of saves, but I think it's a joint one for Fin and Noah for their all round play.
