U8 Hawks

MATCH REPORT: ASCOT UNITED WANDERERS U8 V HEARTS OF TEDDLOTHIAN HAWKS U8

Hearts Hawks U8s edged a hotly competed match away from home, scoring in the final few minutes to come away with a deserved 2-3 victory.

A packed ground very close to ‘the home of racing’ provided the setting for this encounter, the third of the season between these teams, with current results of one victory a piece.

The Hawks lined up with Jack in goal, Alex and Hamish at the back and Finley and Jonny in the advanced positions.

A very non-descript first quarter saw much of the action taking place in midfield and while competitive, neither side was able to take control of the game.

At the beginning of the 2nd Quarter, Harry joined the action at the expense of Jonny who had worked tirelessly to win the ball back and then look to break forward whenever possible.

Alex moved in between the sticks and continued Jack’s solid start to the game, making a couple of routine catches to relieve the pressure.
Hearts began to dominate possession and both Finley and Harry showed great energy and endeavor in hustling the Ascot defense.
A nice interchange of passing and some neat footwork on the edge of the opposition box saw Finley brought down by an Ascot defender. The resulting free kick, also taken by Finley, was drilled low and hard, only to be blocked on the line by a covering defender.
Hearts continued to press forward and Jack then showed his versatility, with a strong run down the line. He used both his pace and a drop of the shoulder to beat his man and made it to the bi line, only for his cross to be fumbled out for a corner by a desperate keeper.

Quarter 3 starts with Finley and Hamish recovering some energy on the sidelines, being replaced by Finn and Johnny respectively.
With the opposition caught a little flat footed a defense splitting angled ball from Finn was clinically dispatched by Johnny with his left foot for the Hawks to take a well-deserved lead.

Ascot immediately responded and saw a couple of solid efforts sail narrowly wide of the Hearts goal.

The game looked to be safe however when Hamish controlled and turned well to find his strike partner Jack in space who then doubled the Hawk’s lead with a neat finish.

Ascot however refused to be beaten and began to break the Hawk’s stranglehold on the game. The home side mounted a series of quick attacks towards the end of the 3rd Quarter and got their reward when the big number 10 found the back of the net with the Hearts keeper unable to react in time.

Both sides looked motivated as they took to the field for the final Quarter, with Finley returning from the bench to take a stint in goal.
Out of nowhere an unlikely equalizer came from the home side, who reacted quickly on the break following a period of sustained Hawks pressure, and with momentum and a lively crowd with them, it was looking as though the Hawks would have been happy to settle for a draw.

With only minutes to go, the away team showed exceptional character to bounce back. They laid siege to the Ascot goal and were duly rewarded by a winning goal from the man of the match, Harry, who toe poked home following a desperate goal mouth scramble.
The Hawks put the misery of last week’s hangover behind them with a well-deserved victory against strong and passionate opposition and hopefully they can continue to build on this performance end of the season approaches!
