The Lions came of age today. Playing the league leaders who had scored 34 goals in 6 games and flying high in the league, the Lions set themselves out to play the team that beat them 2-4 just a few weeks back when we had 9 players. In taking the lead through Josh P in 15 minutes, it was a lead that the Lions deserved after a super-fast and positive start by both sides. Playing a 4-2-3-1 we controlled the game throughout the first half winning 1st and 2nd balls all round the pitch. The team were unlucky when the ref awarded a penalty for the ball striking Joe’s shoulder - but with Karim in goal there’s always hope! Standing his ground, Karim parried the ball and gathered the rebound. There wasn’t much the defence could do to stop Westwood equalising from a swift passing move a few mins before half-time. The second half started the same as the first and both times created chances and the Lions held their own in midfield and our back four reduced Westwood to half-chances and a long-balls. There was nothing Karim could do with a speculative 30yard shot that bounced in off the top of the right post with 20 mins to go. Chances came and went - and while in the balance, Westwood scrambled a third goal with 5 to go. This was though the Lions best performance of the season by a country mile - which is ironic given the number of country miles we’d travelled to get to the back end of Berkshire! Our defence probably sneak the plaudits today while Josh P looked dangerous each time he had the ball. Praise to every single our of our lads - but today’s MOTM may have been snatched by Sam who raised to the battle and gave the Westwood lads nothing down the right flank. If we bring this intensity and team play onto the pitch each week then the next 5 weeks could see the Lions shoot up the table. Great game. Great team.
